Kenya Police and USIU hockey teams are the 2022 Burhani Festival champions after winning the men and women’s finals respectively at the Burhani Sports Club in Mombasa on Sunday.

Kenya Police defeated Sikh Union 3-0 thanks to a pair of penalty flicks John Kaloti and a fine strike from Govan Mbeki.

The women’s final was won by a closer margin with Grace Akumu’s penalty for USIU proving enough to secure a 1-0 win over varsity rivals UON.

Hosts Mvita XI were eliminated in the preliminary rounds after drawing against War-Thogs (2-2) and Kenya Police (2-2), losing 1-0 against USIU and going down with the same margin against Western Jaguars.

Both winners as well as the runners up were awarded trophies and medals.

Charles Shihundu and Fatima Karisa from Western Jaguars and St John’s girls school were recognized as the best upcoming junior players.

Govan Beki and Alice Jokeyo from MSC Squids and Kenya Police finished as the tournament’s top scorers after scoring three and two goals respectively.

The tournament attracted 27 teams; 19 men and eight women.
