Tom Odege, the Secretary General of the Union of Kenya Civil Servants has told the government to allocate money for salary increments for civil servants as agreed, failure to which the workers will down their tools next month.

Odege said the civil servants expect a salary increase and the government has no option but to abide as required by law.

He said the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has no powers to stop the increment of salaries of civil servants as the matter was agreed in court and can only be overturned by the same court.

“SRC purporting to be deferring a salary increment is unacceptable.”

Odege, who is also the Member of Parliament for Nyatike constituency said the civil servants expect salaries to increase, and are not ready to take any excuse from the government.

The SG said the salary increment was budgeted for in the last financial year and therefore cannot be linked to the Finance Bill 2024 that was withdrawn following countrywide protests.
